El Tigre
The Life and Times of El Tigre
Viejo

About John Manhold:
John probably is the last of the
so-called Renaissance Men. At the
age of 88 he has just written and I
have
published his first historical
novel, El Tigre. He has
published 6 textbooks and a Lexicon
in 4 languages, has degrees from 3
universities in somewhat diverse
areas, and has given lectures and
consultations throughout the world.
(His biography is included in
several diverse Marquis’ Who’s
Who publications, including
In The World and In American
Art [he is also an acclaimed
sculptor] and is to appear in the
next British Dictionary of
International Biography). He has
U.S.C.G. Captain’s and Master’s
papers, made voyages with his wife
Kit of up to 6000 miles, played
competitive golf both at home and
internationally, and still is highly
competitive in shooting sports –
medaling in the 2007 Cowboy Fast
Draw Nationals and receiving golds
in both the Cowboy Fast Draw
competition and the 12-stage Cowboy
Action Shooting competition. He
served in both World War II and in
the Korean Conflict, where among
other activities, he taught basic
knife fighting techniques to
trainees.
About El Tigre:
His story is one in which ‘western’
readers profess immense enjoyment.
Paul Kraus of Prescott, AZ. writes,
“I have not been captured by a story
in a very long time. Thank you for
introducing me to such a character
as El Tigre! And I thought the story
telling was captivating. I couldn’t
help but think of all the Louis
L’Amour books I read many years
back.”
Yet, the story is not of this genre
alone. The action of four chapters
take place in Texas and the
Arizona/New Mexico Territory, the
area where Johann earns the title
that carries on through the
following chapters of his life in
Old California. However, it also is
a historical tale of political
intrigue and the deadly action
fallout that occurs in Europe as
well as the forming United States
and the effect it has upon the young
former Prussian Military Academy
student. It is non-stop action
ranging from brutal warfare to a
tender romance, and geographically,
from post Napoleonic War Prussia to
France, the Pyrenees, Spain,
Florida/Georgia, Texas, the
Arizona/New Mexico Territory, and
finally Old California.
Book Reviews:
The Cowboy Chronicle -
John Manhold does a masterful
job weaving this tale of
intrigue, violence, heroism and
love into an incendary tale that
will inspire your imagination
and truly make you want to
believe it REALLY HAPPENED. It
is east to read and you just do
not want to put it down.
Amazon 5 - star review - "El
Tigre" is, most importantly, a
great read! Well-paced and
well-written, it's a book that
you'll want to settle in with
and won't want to put down until
you finish...I was particularly
impressed by the scope of
historical research...included
seamlessly into the narrative.
As the legend of "El Tigre"
grows with each page, you'll
find yourself admiring this
multifaceted hero and will be
pleased at the promise of a
sequel. My wife enjoyed the book
as much as I did, and it would
be suitable for teenage readers
as well.
AC:The peoples Media Co. - I
found El Tigre so captivating at
times that I didn't know what
parts were fictional or true
accounts. At times, I got lost
in the life of Johann Heinrich
von Manfred and thought he was
real.
Gunslinger's Gazette - It has
been a long time since I have
read such a thoroughly
entertaining novel that kept me
on the edge of my easy chair
wondering what was going to
happen next. I highly recommend
this book.
Guns Magazine columnist John
Tiffin - El Tigre is a grand
read and Manhold joins L'Amour
and Kelton as my favorite story
tellers.
