Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree by author Faith Paulus is a moving  story of childhood innocence that characterizes 1960’s America.

Faith Paulus recounts her own childhood in Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree (ISBN: 1598864610) through the eyes of her main character Annie Peters, who struggles to understand her mother’s deteriorating mental health, while coming-of-age in the eye of the Catholic Church.

Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree is a thought provoking and stunning story. The author maintains a great sense of humor while writing about her own tragic adolescent journey.

Solid and hauntingly humorous, Popcorn Poppin On The Apricot Tree playfully invites the reader to awaken dormant memories of his own adolescence.  This story is full of heart and inspiration as well as poignant and funny. Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree  by Faith Paulus  is a must read journey - as Annie Peters reminds us that there are many roads that can lead us to that final destination.

This is a fascinating and true story of five children maintaining their independence within the confining walls of St. Vincent’s Home. It was 1965, Annie Peters was 8 years old when her mother was committed full-time to a Mental Health institution.

In a recent interview the author says, As this unique Coming of Age story suggests, my mother along with quite a few of her Catholic peers, were undergoing pharmaceutical experimentation, at the exact same time that the Catholic movement and our Social structure was being radically shaken alongside the pop culture movement of America.  As a child with a photographic memory, I was the introspective one who was busy taking notes while both my domestic world and our world at large were undergoing drastic change. Although every young American has to experience these uncomfortable passages that mark our adolescence, my siblings and I were quick to see the humor in our unusual adolescent journey.”

Laced with humorous anecdotes and moving images, Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree is sure to evoke dormant memories for fellow Baby Boomers, while stirring the curiosity of all generations as we follow Annie Peters through the childlike innocence and illusions that characterized 1960’s America. The final chapter leaps 32 years forward with a recap of their lives as the siblings return for a Michigan Lake House reunion during the September 11th tragedy of 2001.

The title, Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree, was a favorite song that was taught to the children before the onset of their mother’s illness, and also symbolizes the underlying confusion of the times.
“ Popcorn Poppin on the Apricot Tree depicts the challenge of uncovering the Truth and Illusions of the information that was being handed down to us by government, the Catholic Church, and authority figures, during these turbulent times.  It also might represent the slipping away of my own mother’s reality as she surrendered to her weakening mental illness.”

Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree  is solid with humor and many moving experiences. This story is full of heart heart and inspiration as well as poignant and funny. This book is a ‘Journey – and a not destination.’ Popcorn Poppin’ on the Apricot Tree  by Faith Paulus  is a must read!
