FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS- BookSurge announces the publication of Spindle, by Ian Taylor

Ian Taylor's novel, Spindle, combines comedy and science fiction into one hilarious romp through outer space. Ranked up there with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Red Dwarf, it could be likened to Star Wars on laughing gas. From the opening passages of eager young officer Peter Turner constantly being misinterpreted by the computer that thinks his name is "Whomey," to him being beaten up by a Qezall - a mysterious little ball of a creature that only knows "light" and "eat" on the planet of Bolandi - Spindle will truly transport you to a world of comical blunders all over the universe. http://www.spindlebook.com

In the tradition of Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy comes a third great comedy/scifi universe. Spindle, Book One in the series, tells the story of Peter Turner, rookie recruit in the Space Force. It’s his first week on duty, and already they’ve gotten his name wrong, assigned him to the worst ship in the sector, and partnered him with a brutal sociopath called Oblun who can’t stand him. What more could go wrong?

If Peter doesn’t learn to cope quickly, he’ll be pounded into molecular wind. Will two weeks of training and a degree in trivia be enough to protect him from the dangers of Ataxic sector? (Not to mention his own partner!)  When a planet he’s just visited mysteriously explodes, Peter has to find out just how good he can be. All he can rely on is a partner who hates him, an enigmatic pair of all-too-helpful aliens, and his own desire to save everybody.

In an interview, the author says, "What is Spindle about? It’s about 270 pages...no really, it’s about a young man named Peter who joins the Space Force to travel the known galaxy enforcing justice...but being a space cop isn’t what he expected (what job ever is?) His partner is violent and antisocial, they face greater dangers than Peter ever imagined, and they meet some bizarre aliens and have cool adventures. It’s a hilarious tale of a guy with a degree in trivia and some really big dreams.

Q: Is there going to be a sequel to Spindle?
At least one. Several are planned, but we’ll see.

Q: Is Ian Taylor British? He spells color with a u…
Ah, sort of. He’s Australian, and his parents were born in England but moved to Australia just before Ian was born.

The universe is crying out for a hero. They may be disappointed with what they get. Who’d want to join the Space Force?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Ian Taylor was born in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia in 1972. In addition to writing comedy science fiction, Ian is the writer and illustrator of an online comic strip, Poorly Drawn Theatre. He is also the Rules Manager for the Comic Images/WWE Raw Deal card game. He lives in central Massachusetts with his American-born wife, poet Karen Hatch Taylor, and their three children. He also works as a retail manager, at least until he can make enough money from writing to keep his kids clothed and fed.

The best way to describe Ian Taylor is actually through his wife's reaction to him. Ian was living in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia and Karen was living in Massachusetts. They met through an online newsgroup of "Weird Al" Yankovic fans. After a year of being computer pen pals and becoming good friends, Ian told her that he had completed his first novel, Spindle. Karen was excited to read an entire manuscript by her hilarious new friend, so he sent it to her. Upon reading it, she had the following reactions: "1) This is my favorite book ever! 2) Ian doesn't think like normal people! and 3) I want to marry him!" He came to visit her, and sure enough, they fell in love, were married, and now have three children. Ian has not only written her "favorite book ever," he also saved Karen's life when she had a massive seizure due to a brain tumor discovered while she was pregnant. The resulting brain surgery left her disabled, but she's alive and well and running the Spindle Fan Club. She says she is grateful every day to "Weird Al" Yankovic for introducing her to the man who has written her favorite book and saved her life.
