What would you do if you
were not allowed to see your
children? In a society where fathers’ rights are seldom taken
into consideration, Glen C. Schulz, faced with this chilling
scenario, did the unthinkable: he kidnapped his own children.
Unlawful
Flight tells the true story of one father’s
fight to keep his children safe and a part of his life. In a
post-separation custody battle, Glen was falsely
accused of sexually abusing his children and his visitation
rights were taken away.
While
it’s a sad fact that all too many children are sexually
molested, accusations made in the midst of a custody dispute are
often untrue, made only to gain the advantage in the dispute.
“When I was falsely accused, my heart and soul were shattered. I
was so frustrated that I even attempted suicide,” says Glen.
Finally,
when it became apparent that the legal system was not on his
side, Glen took the law into his own hands. “Unfortunately,
custody is often awarded to the mother whether it is in the best
interests of the children or not,” he says.
Desperate and on the run from the
FBI and the police, Glen and his children were forced to go
underground and assume false identities. Friends, teachers and
family rallied around them, hiding the children when Glen was
arrested; many were also willing to testify in court on his
behalf until he was finally granted full custody of his
children.
In a time when only 15
percent of fathers are awarded custody, a statistic that has
remained unchanged since 1994 according to the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services, Glen’s story is all too typical.
Most fathers give up, agreeing to see their children on
alternate weekends or during supervised visitations. “I wanted
to stay a full-time dad,” says Glen.
Fathers’ rights advocate Glen C.
Schulz now speaks out about the detrimental effects of
protracted custody disputes on children. Glen grew up in the
Erie, Pennsylvania area and lived in Ohio until he was forced to
go on the run with his children. After settling in Texas by the
flip of a nickel, he supported his family by working in the
automotive industry and always found the time to attend his
children’s school functions and sports activities. Despite
multiple arrests, Glen stayed out of prison and was finally
awarded full custody of his children.
Making a career change to publish
this story, Glen enjoys writing children’s tales and poetry, and
is already working on another book. “I hope our story inspires
other divorcing parents to do everything they can to put their
children’s best interests first,” says Glen.

TALKING POINTS
Tell us about
your book.
Unlawful Flight
is the true story of how I fought to
keep my children. During an acrimonious custody battle, I was falsely
accused of sexual abuse and my visitation rights were taken away
without a hearing. Feeling unfairly treated by the system while
my children were being mistreated by their mother and then being
told that there was little hope of getting custody, I was
forced to take the law into my own hands and kidnap my children.
This book details the whole story and takes the reader through
every aspect of our struggle to stay together.
How do the
courts limit fathers’ rights?
Unfortunately, custody is often
awarded to the mother whether it is in the best interests of the
children or not. Even though my story took place over 20 years
ago, fathers today are still only awarded custody
15 percent of the time. A lot of them just give
up the fight and agree to see their children on a part-time
basis.
When do you think parental kidnapping is justified?
When the safety of the children is
at stake. More than 350,000 family abductions occur in the U.S.
each year, with fathers taking the kids in 46 percent of the
cases. Faced with an impossible choice of breaking the law or
living without their children, many of these fathers are forced
to do the unthinkable. Our legal system needs to recognize the
equal rights of both parents and understand that fathers
sometimes make better parents than mothers do.
What can readers learn from your book?
They can learn that
we need to advocate for equal parental rights and that children
are the true losers in adversarial custody disputes. No matter
how the divorcing individuals feel about each other, they should
never use the children as weapons of revenge.
You write that you were falsely accused of sexual abuse.
It’s a sad fact that
so many children are sexually molested. However, accusations
that are made in the midst of a custody battle are often untrue,
made only to gain the advantage in the dispute and alienate the
father. When I was falsely accused and could not see my children
at all, my heart and soul were shattered and I attempted suicide
out of frustration.
Who will benefit from your book?
Anyone who is on the
losing end or in the middle of a custody dispute will benefit.
In particular, fathers facing this situation need to know that
they are not alone. I also think that after reading
Unlawful Flight, all
parents will see the danger in using children as tools to get
what they want. Kidnapping the children is not the answer—public
awareness is.
How are children affected by acrimonious custody disputes?
Children hate
feeling torn between their parents. Their grades drop, they have
nightmares and even many years later, they suffer from
post-traumatic stress disorder. Divorced parents need to put
their bitter feelings aside and work out a plan that puts the
children first.
What is the most exciting scene in the book?
Seven years after
the abduction, the children and I let our guards down and
decided to attend a surprise fortieth anniversary party for my
parents. Four hours after we arrived, the Pennsylvania state
police surrounded the house and demanded entrance but were
denied. While they were outside and in the process of obtaining
a search warrant, our family improvised a plan of escape for us.
How did you manage to keep your family together?
We did it with the
help of complete strangers, friends, family, teachers and above
all else, God. At every crisis, there was always someone there
willing to help. For example, when the FBI arrested me and led
me away in handcuffs, our friends, teachers and co-workers hid
and protected my children until I could obtain my release.
Do you have plans to write any more books?
I am working on
another novel right now and have written several as-yet
unpublished children’s books and many poems. I test them out on
my granddaughter—if the story doesn't hold her interest, I tear
it up!

CHILDREN
When he married in 1971, Glen C.
Schulz never dreamed it wouldn’t last. Nevertheless, 10 years
later, he found himself embroiled in a bitter and acrimonious
custody battle.
Glen was falsely
accused of sexually abusing his children and his visitation
rights were taken away without so much as a hearing. When
it became apparent that the legal system was not on his side, he
was forced to take the law into his own hands. He fled with his
two children and eventually settled in Houston, Texas.
On the run from the FBI and the
police, Glen and his children were forced to go underground and
assume false identities. Friends, teachers and family rallied
around them, hiding the children when Glen was arrested and when
their mother tried to steal them back.
Unlawful
Flight is a true story of suspense, the power
of love and one father’s brave stand to keep his children safe.
